Why do souvenir shops and department stores\u00a0thrive in every corner of Japan? Why would an\u00a0almost stranger\u00a0take the trouble to\u00a0give me some memorabilia from their trip? These experiences revealed the extent of Japan\u2019s tradition of gifting, and how the culture around both giving and receiving gifts differs in many ways from the American culture I grew up with.\u00a0Allow me to expound upon the experience of Japanese gift culture and through it, reveal key insights\u00a0into the mental\u00a0model Japanese shoppers often\u00a0utilize\u00a0when shopping for gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #34775c\" class=\"sme-text-color\">The Occasion: Small Tokens of Appreciation\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the occasion may vary, the\u00a0main\u00a0reason underpinning Japanese gift culture is\u00a0a sense of\u00a0<span style=\"background-image: linear-gradient(transparent 60%, rgba(255, 240, 151, 0.5) 60%)\" class=\"sme-highlighter\">social obligation and meeting expectations<\/span>. Gifts are an easy means of expressing reciprocity\u00a0for a favor or action, even if that\u00a0action\u00a0is\u00a0relatively minor. Here are some common occasions for gifting in Japan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #34775c\" class=\"sme-text-color\"><strong>Souvenirs:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pillar of gift-giving in Japan\u00a0and most noteworthy example\u00a0are the expectations around giving souvenirs.\u00a0Businesspersons\u00a0traveling for work are\u00a0very likely\u00a0to pick up something to share with their family, and even their fellow coworkers, upon returning. It can be partially understood as a\u00a0<span style=\"background-image: linear-gradient(transparent 60%, rgba(255, 240, 151, 0.5) 60%)\" class=\"sme-highlighter\">thank you gift for shouldering the burden of work<\/span>\u00a0in the individual\u2019s absence, and a worker would be sure to buy enough to cover their entire department. The souvenirs for others may even take precedence over any memorabilia they would\u00a0purchase\u00a0for themselves!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #34775c\" class=\"sme-text-color\"><strong>Home visits:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being invited to one\u2019s home is a great honor, and coming empty handed would disrupt that sense of trust. Bringing back a taste of the local fair home with you is\u00a0a common practice, and every stop along the bullet train is certain to have a souvenir shop with whatever item or cuisine that area is known for. When asking how life is in more rural prefectures, the typical reply from anyone\u00a0who\u2019s\u00a0lived there will\u00a0be \u201cwell, the (rice\/seafood\/fruit\/sake) is good.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #34775c\" class=\"sme-text-color\"><strong>Boxed Sets<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small candies and snacks, individually packaged and sold in sets, are popular choices for\u00a0economical\u00a0reasons. Returning to the fruit example, the most prized produce not only taste good, but look good. As&nbsp;an added bonus, because the gifting transaction is recorded in the app\u2019s chat history,&nbsp;there\u2019s&nbsp;added pressure to reciprocate the kind gesture.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another example is the rapidly growing adoption of AI tools by\u00a0Japanese shoppers.\u00a0Our company has worked on several projects looking at Japanese customers\u2019 online shopping journey and supporting the development of AI\u00a0tools for usage\u00a0in e-commerce, with the most recent study\u00a0finishing up\u00a0in March of 2026.\u00a0For the online shopping experience,\u00a0Japanese users expect\u00a0tools such as Gemini or ChatGPT\u00a0to\u00a0fill the role of store clerks, providing both\u00a0<span style=\"background-image: linear-gradient(transparent 60%, rgba(255, 240, 151, 0.5) 60%)\" class=\"sme-highlighter\">expertise\u00a0and clear guidance<\/span>\u00a0to lead customers to a suitable product. For a business with products to sell,\u00a0optimizing\u00a0the quality and discoverability of one\u2019s products by AI will improve touchpoints with potential Japanese shoppers, particularly those under 35\u00a0y.o.\u00a0who use AI tools more\u00a0frequently.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Social media sites popular among Japanese people, such as Instagram or TikTok, are also strong areas for advertising and&nbsp;showcasing&nbsp;products.&nbsp;While algorithmic recommendations are usually tailored to the user, making them less reliable for gift ideas,&nbsp;they can still generate inspiration for gifts to friends or family with similar interests or lifestyles. In our past research&nbsp;regarding&nbsp;social media\u2019s influence in shopping decisions, we found Japanese customers resonated most with non-affiliated influencers&nbsp;and their product recommendations. Most influencers a user&nbsp;sees&nbsp;are relevant to a user\u2019s lifestyle, and their opinions are&nbsp;expected to be more unbiased and trustworthy.&nbsp;Leveraging online personalities not only for product reviews but&nbsp;even&nbsp;full gift-opening&nbsp;\u201cexperiences\u201d&nbsp;would clearly depict&nbsp;the emotional sense of wonder involved in the gift giving occasion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #34775c\" class=\"sme-text-color\">Conclusion&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While there are similarities in the reasons behind gift-giving when compared to other cultures,\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0unique about Japan is the emphasis on\u00a0maintaining\u00a0relationships through the expression and exchange of gifts.
