This is what we have&nbsp;always&nbsp;believed to be&nbsp;\u201cgood UX.\u201d&nbsp;However,&nbsp;with&nbsp;generative&nbsp;AI&nbsp;beginning to take over parts of human&nbsp;work,&nbsp;we ask:&nbsp;<span style=\"background-image: linear-gradient(transparent 60%, rgba(255, 240, 151, 0.5) 60%)\" class=\"sme-highlighter\">Is offering effortless and easy experiences&nbsp;really&nbsp;beneficial&nbsp;for humans?<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche&nbsp;stated&nbsp;\u201cGod is dead\u201d and&nbsp;repeatedly&nbsp;questioned established values.&nbsp;If we look through his lens,&nbsp;modern UX&nbsp;design might be doing the opposite of empowering users\u2014it could be weakening them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #34775c\" class=\"sme-text-color\">How&nbsp;UX Turns Users&nbsp;into the \u201cLast Man\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;\u201cThus Spoke Zarathustra\u201d,&nbsp;Nietzsche introduces the \u201cLast Man\u201d (Letzter Mensch). The \u201cLast Man\u201d avoids&nbsp;new&nbsp;challenges&nbsp;and&nbsp;adventures,&nbsp;seeking&nbsp;only&nbsp;comfort and stability. They&nbsp;run away&nbsp;from&nbsp;risks and&nbsp;say \u201cwe have discovered happiness\u201d&nbsp;without ever&nbsp;testing&nbsp;the limits of their own potential.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern digital products offer&nbsp;easier and more convenient&nbsp;experiences&nbsp;than ever before.&nbsp;But could these experiences be&nbsp;leading&nbsp;users&nbsp;to become&nbsp;the&nbsp;\u201cLast Man\u201d?&nbsp;Products are recommended to fit each customer\u2019s needs&nbsp;and&nbsp;allow&nbsp;users to&nbsp;purchase&nbsp;items with a touch of a button. There&nbsp;is&nbsp;no confusion&nbsp;and no&nbsp;struggle, but&nbsp;simultaneously,&nbsp;there is no&nbsp;personal will&nbsp;or&nbsp;growth.&nbsp;This&nbsp;convenient&nbsp;UX design&nbsp;can turn users into&nbsp;passive consumers&nbsp;rather than active participants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #34775c\" class=\"sme-text-color\">Beyond Usability: Designing for a Sense of Power&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 28%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Nietzsche proposed the concept of the \u00dcbermensch, or \u201cOverman\u201d&nbsp;as&nbsp;the opposite&nbsp;of the&nbsp;\u201cLast&nbsp;Man.\u201d&nbsp;<span style=\"background-image: linear-gradient(transparent 60%, rgba(255, 240, 151, 0.5) 60%)\" class=\"sme-highlighter\">\u00dcbermensch is&nbsp;one&nbsp;who&nbsp;goes beyond&nbsp;their current self and creates new values through their own will. At the&nbsp;core&nbsp;of this idea lies the \u201cwill to&nbsp;power\u201d,&nbsp;a fundamental drive to grow, to exert one\u2019s abilities, and to fully realize one\u2019s potential.<\/span>&nbsp;In the age of AI, the goal of UX should not be to simply make things easier for users. But&nbsp;this is&nbsp;just the starting point. Users can adjust&nbsp;the&nbsp;sliders, fine-tune AI suggestions, and&nbsp;ultimately shape&nbsp;the final image themselves. Initially, there may be a learning curve to understand what each parameter does.&nbsp;However,&nbsp;after&nbsp;trial and error, users&nbsp;can&nbsp;gain full control over the AI,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the experience&nbsp;no longer feels AI driven.&nbsp;They&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;feel replaced. They feel more&nbsp;capable,&nbsp;more expressive. They love these tools not because&nbsp;they\u2019re&nbsp;easy, but because they offer mastery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, Photoshop has long been a professional tool even before AI.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;not inherently&nbsp;intuitive, and&nbsp;mastering it involves a certain degree of challenge. But with AI, the possibilities for broader and freer expression expand even further. Users&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;love it simply because&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;easy to use, but because&nbsp;they can&nbsp;control&nbsp;it with mastery. This, we argue, is UX in the Nietzschean sense:&nbsp;<span style=\"background-image: linear-gradient(transparent 60%, rgba(255, 240, 151, 0.5) 60%)\" class=\"sme-highlighter\">not just usability, but the expansion of human capability.<\/span> And in the years to come, this sense of empowerment may become&nbsp;key to&nbsp;what makes UX truly exceptional.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #34775c\" class=\"sme-text-color\"><strong>AI as a Substitute or as an Extension?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, AI is no longer a specialized add-on.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;becoming a default&nbsp;component&nbsp;of&nbsp;nearly every&nbsp;product and service. That makes one design decision&nbsp;absolutely critical:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Substitution-oriented AI<\/strong>: AI takes over tedious tasks.&nbsp;The approach of&nbsp;\u201cyou can rest,&nbsp;we\u2019ll handle it for you.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Augmentation-oriented AI<\/strong>: AI amplifies human capability.&nbsp;The approach of &#8220;you&nbsp;already have&nbsp;the&nbsp;wings,&nbsp;let us help you fly.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Substitution-oriented&nbsp;AI&nbsp;may be&nbsp;more&nbsp;convenient, but it risks turning users into the&nbsp;\u201cLast Man\u201d.&nbsp;Argumentation-oriented AI&nbsp;helps users become something closer to Nietzsche\u2019s&nbsp;\u201cOverman\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider writing tools powered by AI.&nbsp;An AI that automatically writes and sends emails on your behalf is&nbsp;substitution-oriented.&nbsp;An AI that&nbsp;acts as a sparring partner, helping you organize&nbsp;fragmented&nbsp;ideas and challenge your arguments, is&nbsp;augmentation-oriented. When using the latter, users&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;think,&nbsp;\u201cI got away with less effort.\u201d&nbsp;They think,&nbsp;\u201cI didn\u2019t realize I could think this deeply.\u201d&nbsp;<span style=\"background-image: linear-gradient(transparent 60%, rgba(255, 240, 151, 0.5) 60%)\" class=\"sme-highlighter\">Should we use AI as a butler that does everything for us, or as a partner that helps us become stronger? This is the question UX design faces today.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #34775c\" class=\"sme-text-color\"><strong>Should Every Product&nbsp;Aim to&nbsp;Create&nbsp;an&nbsp;\u201cOverman\u201d?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, not every UX needs to focus on expanding user capabilities. For management dashboards, routine workflows, or public service systems, minimizing cognitive load and providing support&nbsp;behind-the-scenes&nbsp;remains&nbsp;a core principle of good UX.&nbsp;However, in&nbsp;areas&nbsp;that involve human thinking and creativity,&nbsp;simply making things more&nbsp;convenient&nbsp;is no longer enough.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key question becomes, \u201cdo users feel&nbsp;that they have grown beyond their pervious abilities?\u201d&nbsp;In a world where AI products are rapidly commoditized, this sense of personal evolution may be the&nbsp;central principle for designing and evaluating AI products.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #34775c\" class=\"sme-text-color\"><strong>Rethinking UX Research<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/uism.co.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/\u5929\u79e4-1024x683.png\" alt=\"A sketch shows a man weighing two paths. It aimed to&nbsp;eliminate&nbsp;points where users get stuck or&nbsp;slowed&nbsp;down. Negative obstacles were the enemy. But&nbsp;for tools of augmentation, some struggle that we might call \u201cpositive friction\u201d is essential for growth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have&nbsp;the task&nbsp;encouraged&nbsp;users to push themselves?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do users&nbsp;feel&nbsp;more&nbsp;capable after completing this task?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In UX research, we need to evaluate not just the convenience and comfort of the uses, but also feelings of competence and mastery.&nbsp;<span style=\"background-image: linear-gradient(transparent 60%, rgba(255, 240, 151, 0.5) 60%)\" class=\"sme-highlighter\">It is not enough to remove pain points. We also need to&nbsp;identify&nbsp;the power&nbsp;points,&nbsp;moments where users feel empowered.<\/span>&nbsp;We believe these moments hold the key to UX research in the coming generations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #34775c\" class=\"sme-text-color\"><strong>Closing<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Which path will we choose?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nietzsche once said that humans are like a tightrope stretched between beasts and the overman.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will we stay where we are, or step across to the other side? With the powerful technology of AI in our hands, UX design is expanding beyond the design of interfaces. It is now reaching into the design of human evolution itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Products and services can make users weaker&nbsp;or stronger. The real question&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;which one&nbsp;users&nbsp;choose, but&nbsp;how much room they leave for&nbsp;self-transformation.&nbsp;How does your product or service help users grow and change?
